The HTC Vive might’ve stolen some of Samsung’s thunder, but it bears reminding that the latter did announce a new VR headset earlier this week. Sure, the Gear VR for the Galaxy S6 is only slightly different from the original Note 4 edition , but even minor tweaks can spell big improvement. It’s smaller, lighter, has a wider focus margin and there’s a new strap design that promises to make the headset much more comfortable than before. I had a chance to give it a spin earlier this week and I also talked to Max Cohen, VP of mobile at Oculus, to get his take on the new hardware, possible future updates and, of course, his opinion on the HTC Vive.
But one video of the October 13 Democratic presidential debate was disappointing. There were four VR cameras around the room, but you couldn’t pick the one to watch. And in 3-D, candidates looked like dolls on stage. It was a novel idea, but it’ll take time to figure out what works and what doesn’t. This one was also long, while the best ones were typically a few minutes each.
Social-media datasets often munge together all those personal revelations into a big picture without correcting for things that make a big difference in their accuracy — like the demographic differences between social network populations, the type of information usually posted on each the number of bots and spammers pretending to be human users and even the effect of the site design on the tone of the content posted.
The final upgrade is the introduction of a USB port, which lets you charge your S6 while it’s inside the headset. While that’s a welcome change for anyone sitting around at home watching movies on their Gear VR, it does highlight that you won’t get as much playtime from free Samsung Gear VR the headset as the original. That’s because the S6 has a far smaller (2,600mAh versus 3,220mAh) battery, making charging a necessity for longer sessions, and somewhat negating one of the Gear VR’s main benefits over the competition – the fact that it’s untethered.
These devices provide plethora of functions from being a GPS smart watch to a heart rate monitor to a smart eye wear. With a good wearable device, you can watch videos and browse through pictures as well as read text messages and emails. What’s more, if you’re smart watch is cool enough, you can even respond to voice commands, browse the web and much more. For businesses, these are a boon since many business operations can be made convenient.
